Since 1870…

The Anchorage Motel occupies the large in-town lot that once contained the famous St. Sauveur Hotel. Built in 1870 by John Clark and owned by Fred A Alley, it was consumed by fire in 1881 only to be rebuilt the following year. A contemporary guidebook says the St. Sauveur “enjoyed the patronage of a very smart set of guests. Its location on Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor’s ‘most popular boulevard’ gave it distinction.”

Accommodating 200 guests, room rates for two were $16 to $28 per week and for transients, $4 per day. It had all the modern conveniences such as electric lights, electric bells, gas, elevators, hot and cold baths, fireplaces, etc.

The St. Sauveur was demolished in 1945.
