LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College student Bella Stone of Concord spent the summer conducting research at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Stone, a Biology major, received funding for her research through Bates from IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence.

Stone is among 250 students who received support from Bates to accept summer work that facilitated professional exploration and reflection about fulfilling future career paths. Through curricular and co-curricular experiences, students have an opportunity to identify and plan for meaningful work they plan to pursue after graduation.

Stone used zebrafish, which have a similar kidney function to humans, to investigate the connection between kidney disease and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neurological disorder.

“I’ve always been interested in science, and I’ve always wanted to go to medical school, but it’s really important to understand the research behind the medicine,” Stone said. “The internship has really helped me have a better appreciation for and a better understanding of research scientists and everything they do to make medicine possible.”
