TRENTON, Maine (WABI) – Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport and county commissioners have recommended Silver Airways as the new carrier for the airport.

Proposals were sent in after Pen-Air’s recent announcement they would end their contract with the airport in June.

Both Silver Airways and Boutique Air were being considered as options to provide seasonal air service to the area.

Airport officials say Silver Airways checked all the boxes.

Brad Madeira, Airport Manager says, “They are offering service in sub-turbo prop aircraft which is really a great aircraft for our market. They’re proposing to operate on a similar schedule and that seems to do really well in terms of serving our market and our demand. One of the real pluses to Silver is they happen to have a co-chair agreement with Jet Blue. It just makes for really good seamless travel convenience out of this airport, so that’s an exciting thing for the people that fly in and out of here.”

While county and airport officials have recommended Silver Airways, it’s up to the U.S. Department of Transportation to make the final decision.

Officials say if the decision is made by early May, it should make for a smooth transition.
